Sprint 2 VR Project

This sprint we were supposed to write a script, complete our asset list with first and second version and set up scale of our assets in our project. I laid up the basic landscape of the map and proxy modeled hard candy and bushes. We came up with ideas as a team for the script and I compiled the script.

The following is the layout of the first draft of layout.

The second draft looked like the following:

The proxies for hard candy and bushes came out as the following:

Common Art - Art without rules

For this week's common art assignment we were given no rules and were told to create the best piece of art. While scrolling through different pictures I came across this picture which I really liked. It had an emotion connected to it that I wanted to replicate.

I wanted to recreate the scene but wanted to add an effect to it as well. I wanted to make a "Plotagraph" inspired picture for this. For that I modeled the deck in Maya and then textured it in Substance and then put it in Photoshop to color it more.

For animated water I created a material in UE4 which gave the illusion that the water is flowing. Then I combined that with the deck in Photoshop and completed the artwork.

The above is the beauty shot of the final illustration. The video came out as below:

Use of Composition

Last week we were taught about how to compose the shots. Several rules such as rule of thirds, leading lines etc. were taught. As as assignment we were given a Composition bashing kit and were told to create a composition using either photo bashing or 3D model bashing. My work flow as follows:

So below is the kit scene that I create using the models that we were given:

Beauty Render

Normal Map

Z depth Map

I took the reference from the following picture from Avengers: Endgame

Hence I created the following composition in Photoshop using the render from above:

Setting up basic lighting

This week in common art we were given 3 different models and we had to setup a basic 3 point lighting to light up the models. The following in the photograph that shows how I setup my lighting:

We were supposed to light up the Lego model that we created in the last assignment. Below is the Lego model that I lit up using the same lighting style:

I created a final scene comprising of the three models and I took the lighting ideas/reference from the following pictures:

The final scene looked like below:

Lighting the scene using different passes

This week we were given a 3D model created and rendered in Maya and it's different light passes. The passes given to us were: Ambient Occlusion, Z-depth, Toon Line, ID Pass, Normal pass. We had to combine these passes to color the whole scene which would focus a part of the scene which we want the viewer to focus on. The given scene is as follows:

I wanted to focus on the guy in the top center and the scene looked like they all were looking at something. So I lit up the scene as per the idea that there is a fire which everyone is looking at. Although the whole background is cool, the fire makes every element in the scene really warm. The final scene looked like below:

Reference Art

In this week, we were told to withdraw inspiration from the work of Sparth (Syd Mead) and model a piece inspired by his art. After modelling the piece we had to migrate it to Photoshop where we had to color and finalise the piece. The following three pictures are where I took the inspiration from:

Combing several elements from the pictures, I rendered the following 3D model:

From first to last: Model without lighting, Model Along with a sky box, Finalised model with a blue light to understand the shadows and highlights, Final model to migrate to Photoshop

Using these renders I migrated to Photoshop and colored the piece and the final output was as follows:

Silhouette Art

For this week a reference silhouette of a Ship/Aeroplane was given to us. Using that reference we had to create 9 different silhouette designs of a ship. I took the inspiration from several fighter jets used or are being used by different countries and created the following 9 silhouettes.

Inspiration taken from the following photos:
